Entebbe and Kampala

For most travelers, Entebbe and Kampala are Uganda’s true starting point, and together they offer more than enough to fill a day or two before or after a safari. The two sit about thirty minutes apart along the shores of Lake Victoria, and each has its own distinct character, giving travelers a natural way to ease into the country or unwind before flying home.

Entebbe is the gentler of the two, a lakeside peninsula town with a relaxed, tropical feel quite different from Kampala’s energy. The Entebbe Botanical Gardens are the highlight for most visitors, a lush stretch of rainforest, palm-lined paths, and lakeshore trails established at the turn of the twentieth century and popular with birdwatchers for the well over a hundred species recorded among the trees and shoreline. Nearby, the Uganda Wildlife Education Centre offers a gentle introduction to the country’s iconic species, while a boat trip out to Ngamba Island brings travelers close to a sanctuary for rescued chimpanzees, a rewarding half-day outing even for those not trekking chimps elsewhere in the country. Since Entebbe is home to the international airport, it also makes the most practical final stop before departure.

Kampala, by contrast, is Uganda’s vibrant capital, and a day here rewards travelers with a real sense of the country’s culture and history. The Uganda Museum, the oldest in East Africa, offers a compact but worthwhile introduction to the country’s heritage, while the Kasubi Tombs, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and burial ground of Buganda kings, provide a window into the traditions of the kingdom that still shapes much of central Uganda today. Travelers with an interest in architecture and city views often enjoy climbing the minaret of the Uganda National Mosque, and a stroll or guided walking tour through the city’s markets and hillside neighborhoods adds color and context that a highway drive alone cannot offer.

Combined, Entebbe and Kampala make an easy and worthwhile addition either before a safari begins or after it concludes, giving travelers a taste of Ugandan history, culture, and everyday life to complement the wildlife encounters still to come, or to reflect on the ones just completed.
