Lake Mburo National Park
Lake Mburo is Uganda’s smallest savanna park, and often its most quietly memorable. Set roughly halfway between Kampala and the parks of the west, it makes a natural and rewarding stop rather than a simple layover. Rolling hills, acacia woodland, and a chain of small lakes create a landscape distinct from anywhere else in the country, and the absence of elephants here has allowed the woodlands to grow especially lush.
What sets Lake Mburo apart is the way travelers get to experience it. This is the only park in Uganda where guests can explore on foot, on a mountain bike, or on horseback alongside grazing zebra and antelope, a rare freedom in African safari terms. The park is also home to Uganda’s only population of impala and its largest herds of zebra, along with an excellent variety of birdlife across its wetlands and papyrus swamps. A quiet boat cruise on the lake itself offers close encounters with hippo and the occasional African fish eagle overhead.
For itineraries en route to Bwindi or returning from gorilla trekking, Lake Mburo offers a gentle, restorative stop, and a welcome change of pace before or after the more demanding forest treks further west.
