Murchison Falls National Park
Murchison Falls is Uganda’s oldest and largest protected area, and its centerpiece needs no exaggeration. Here, the Nile is forced through a gorge just a few meters wide before plunging into the churning pool below, sending up a permanent mist and a roar that can be heard well before the falls come into view. The river’s calmer stretches, both above and below the falls, are some of the richest wildlife corridors in the country, drawing elephant, giraffe, and buffalo to the banks while hippo and Nile crocodile hold their ground in the shallows.
A boat cruise on the Nile is the signature experience here, carrying travelers past grazing wildlife and, for the fortunate, a glimpse of the elusive shoebill stork in the delta. Game drives across the park’s northern savanna round out the experience, with healthy populations of lion and the endangered Rothschild’s giraffe often close at hand. Murchison’s history adds its own texture: the park has hosted everyone from Winston Churchill to Ernest Hemingway, and its landscape once served as the backdrop for old Hollywood.
For travelers building a broader Uganda itinerary, Murchison combines naturally with chimpanzee trekking in the neighboring Budongo Forest, offering both classic savanna safari and primate encounters within a single stay. It is an ideal opening or closing chapter for a Uganda journey, striking and unmistakably its own.
