Kibale National Park
Kibale is Uganda’s premier destination for chimpanzee trekking, and for good reason. The forest holds one of the largest chimpanzee populations in East Africa, with multiple habituated communities and sighting rates that rank among the highest anywhere primates are tracked. Treks typically take a few hours through dense, beautiful rainforest before rewarding travelers with a full hour in the company of a chimpanzee troop, an encounter that tends to stay with people long after they have gone home.
Beyond the chimpanzees, Kibale is one of the richest primate destinations on the continent, home to a dozen or more additional species including red colobus, L’Hoest’s monkey, and grey-cheeked mangabey, often spotted along the same trails during a single outing. The surrounding forest also supports excellent birdlife and a landscape of towering hardwoods that feels genuinely untouched.
For travelers pairing primates with savanna wildlife, Kibale sits conveniently close to Queen Elizabeth National Park, allowing a seamless shift from forest trekking to open plains game drives within the same trip. It is frequently cited as one of the best chimpanzee experiences anywhere in Africa, and it rarely disappoints.
